Tips to Prevent Gym Injuries
Anyone who is active understands that injuries can happen. Even for those who regularly head to the gym can incur a sports injury. There are some simple steps you can take, however, to minimize and even prevent gym injuries.
Use Static and Dynamic Stretching
Even finely tuned athletes can benefit from stretching prior to any gym activity. Static stretches while the body is at rest gradually lengthen the muscles. The key to static stretching is to stretch the targeted muscle and hold in the stretched position for 30 seconds or so. With dynamic stretching, momentum is used to propel the muscle to extend, but not to exceed the extension that occurs during a static stretch. Both forms prepare the muscles for the exercise ahead.
A cool down period following a workout helps the muscles better transition from exercise mode to rest. It also allows the heart rate to gradually return to normal. People who are pressed for time will generally skip this important part of a workout routine.
Water transports nutrition to your cells. It also helps in transforming protein and glycogen. Water is critical for your muscles to flex properly and lack of hydration can cause muscles to cramp and injuries could result.
Our bodies depend on what we eat to supply energy, protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals. If you are not receiving proper nutrition, your body is more prone to injury when working out.
