What Is Scoliosis?

Your spine has a natural curve which is important for the distribution of loads imposed during weight-bearing. In your neck and low back, this curve moves in (lordosis), and in your mid back, the curve moves out (kyphosis). People with scoliosis also have an abnormal spinal curve that moves side to side like an S. You may notice uneven shoulders, altered leg lengths, or an abnormal posture. In more subtle cases (which is more typical), there may be no obvious visual signs, but you or your child may complain of persistent back pain or hip pain.

This condition can impede a person's tolerance to physical activity, and in severe cases may even affect breathing, digestion, and other functions. It often runs in families and may be present at birth, or it can develop as a child grows, especially during puberty. Developmentally-related scoliosis is often more responsive to treatment compared to a scoliotic curve present at birth or one caused by infection, illness, or injury. That said, any case has the potential to respond to chiropractic care.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help People With Scoliosis

Scoliosis isn't curable--but it is manageable! Diagnosis is made through a thorough patient history taking, physical exam, and X-rays. Based on the results of the examination, our chiropractors can develop a customized treatment plan to help provide effective pain relief.

Our scoliosis treatment focuses on reducing any associated pain, maximizing spinal mobility and alignment, improving the efficiency of the nervous system, and balancing out the strength, endurance, and flexibility of key postural muscles. We do this through a variety of techniques, including spinal adjustments, massage therapy, strengthening and stretching exercises, and postural re-education. While we may not be able to completely "fix" or resolve the abnormal curve, we can and do help our patients with scoliosis live healthier, more active lives--with far less pain!

The added bonus is that we don't rely on drugs or invasive procedures. Instead, our chiropractors work with you or your loved one to help the body heal itself.
