Extremity Chiropractic Care

Our Valley Chiropractic Doctors Provide Extremity Chiropractic Care

When you think of chiropractic care, you may naturally associate with treatment of whiplash, backaches and other issues related specifically to spinal discomfort. But problems with your spine can create other problems elsewhere, including the extremities -- and problems in the extremities can have an impact on your overall well being. Chiropractic treatment can thus help you get over many different types of extremity issues, from sports injuries to sciatica. That's why our chiropractors (Dr. Tim Coykendall, Dr. Joseph Russell and Dr. Johannes Garrido) make a point of offering extremity chiropractic care for our Tracy, Mountain House and Manteca patients.

The human body is a very complex machine indeed, with every individual part affecting the comfort and function of other parts. A pinched nerve in the lower lumbar spine, for instance, can cause shooting pains, numbness, odd sensations or lack of muscle control in a leg or foot. A herniated disc pressing against a nerve in the cervical spinal region can cause similar symptoms in an arm or hand. This is a phenomenon known as referred pain. On a less direct basis, a musculoskeletal imbalance originating in the spine can put the body's muscles, tendons and ligaments under unnatural strain. This can lead to plantar fasciitis (a connective tissue inflammation of the foot), runner's knee, iliotibial band sydrome (which causes hip pain), chronic backaches and more.

Of course, extremity pain can also originate within the extremity itself. Acute hamstring injuries and other sprains/strains are an obvious example -- especially in cases such as a sprained ankle, where the bones in the joint may be too misaligned to heal properly. Pain that leads you to favor one extremity may throw your body off balance, triggering pain elsewhere.

The first step in our extremity treatment for Tracy, Mountain House and Manteca residents is to see whether the cause is rooted in the spinal column. If a spinal misalignment, herniated disc or other problem is causing referred pain to the extremity, then spinal adjustments are a sensible first step in our extremity chiropractic care strategy.

If your problem clearly stems from the extremity, your chiropractor may need to make gentle, precise adjustments to the affected joint. Stabilizing an unbalanced joint can relieve stretching and strain suffered by the connective tissues surrounding the joint, promoting better healing and making you less susceptible to future injuries. At the same time, we may prescribe massage therapy to restore healthy range of motion to the joint while also relieving soft tissue pain, swelling and inflammation. Your extremity chiropractic care plan may also include physiotherapy techniques ranging from laser therapy and hydrotherapy to electrical muscle stimulation.
